SPJA Seeks Board of Directors Candidates for 2016

The SPJA is looking for a few good folks to join our Board of Directors! SPJA’s Board Elections will be held in October 2016. Elected Board members will serve a two-year term.

 

What does the SPJA Board do?

As the governing body of the SPJA, The SPJA Board of Directors ensures the financial and legal health of the organization and sets overall strategy, goals, policies, and direction for the organization. The SPJA Board of Directors also oversees and guides the SPJA’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to ensure that the organization remains consistent with its mission statement, goals, and direction. While day-to-day operations are led by the CEO, the Board will often offer feedback, guidance, or assist as appropriate.

 

What kind of qualifications does it take to be a Board Director?

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Passion to make a significant and visionary difference in the industries and communities the organization promotes and serves.
  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the non-profit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of, and ideally contacts within, the anime/manga/entertainment industries or the business community.
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the SPJA’s mission, values, and goals.
  • Familiarity with Anime Expo or other large conventions and/or events.
  • Ability to think long term strategically and willingness to be hands off operationally.
  • Diplomatic skills, the ability to cultivate relationships, and build consensus.
  • Ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, and work well with people collaboratively.
  • Sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, and a developed sense of values.
  • Proactive commitment to fulfilling Board duties and following through on tasks and action items.
  • Flexibility during weekday evenings to participate in teleconference meetings.
  • A sense of humor also helps!

 

What are some specific things that Board members do? The Board of Directors supports the work of SPJA and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Specific Board Member duties and responsibilities include:

  • Working with other Board members to develop and refine the SPJA’s yearly goals and long term strategic plans.
  • Advising the CEO and staff when appropriate regarding the SPJA’s operational plans.
  • Participating in Regular Monthly Board Meetings and Special Board Meetings either in person or via conference call.
  • Attending and participating up to four In-Person Meetings per year (approximately 3-4 weekends a year, including during Anime Expo and Anime Conji).
  • Serve on at least one Board Committee and participate actively on such committee(s) as needed.
  • Approving SPJA’s annual budget, audit reports, major contracts, and high-level business decisions.
  • Staying informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the SPJA.
  • Reviewing documents, agenda and reports prior to Board and Committee meetings.
  • Engage actively with the SPJA Membership, Staff, and Volunteers by participating in various SPJA functions.
  • Active engagement with the communities and industries served by the organization.

 

As the SPJA Board is primarily focused on strategy and governance of the organization, if your desire is to directly affect the operations of Anime Expo or Project Anime, you should instead apply for a staff or employee position.

 

If you are manager level or above, volunteer staff or an employee for the SPJA, you must be willing to resign your current position.

 

What are the benefits? Do Board members get paid?

Service on the SPJA Board of Directors is an unpaid volunteer position. Board Directors do receive a hotel room and passes to SPJA events and expenses are reimbursed for in person meetings.

 

Okay I am interested! So what do I need to do?

  1. To apply, send a resume, cover letter, and any letters of recommendation to BODapps@spja.org.
  2. Deadline to submit for the 2016 election is September 26, 2016 5:00PM PST.
  3. Candidates should be available to attend and meet with current Board members at least one day of Anime Expo 2017 and at least one in person meeting with a Board member.
  4. Candidates must be available for up to two evening phone interviews during September and October
  5. If nominated for the ballot, they must prepare a one page written statement with picture for voting informational purposes. This will be distributed to the SPJA Membership.
  6. If elected, candidates must be able to sign a Board Service Agreement, NDA, and attend a weekend orientation/training session in person at the SPJA Office in Southern California.
